Small Town America

So I felt like stretching some of the creative writing muscles I had not used since high school. My goal is to give you a mental image that will take you back to the place you have been through that seemed like a whole other world. I hope you like it. Mrs Stephens, this one is for you.

The day was hot and the air was thick. Time dragged on despondently. Leaves rustled in a listless breeze, an almost pathetic attempt at displaying life.
The city was a small and quiet one. Old houses alongside older trees and roads. The local children ran and played in the small dilapidated park. Old men gathered on the steps of the archaic courthouse to hear the same stories they had been telling for years. Every once in a while, a mother would call out and the group of children would expel one from its membership.
To the stranger and interloper, this town was like many others. Worn out and woe-be-gone. Run down and decaying into oblivion. But to the denizens, it was security and peace and happiness. Families grew old and became young at the same time. The generations passed on like a marching band moving off the scene.
My time there was short, but it left an impression. I see the history of what once was with the sadness of the inevitable irrelevance. Newer, faster, and better would soon be replacing the hand me down, the eventual for the patient, and the simply good enough.
What would become of this place? Would time allow it to pass gracefully on to the next generation? Would it wither and die juxtaposed against the furious pace of progress? Would it thrive as a hallmark of a bygone era? Would it adapt and become wholly new again? To these questions and many others, only time will tell…

Art as a part of my family history

I come from a long line of creative people. I have relatives that are musicians, artists, writers, poets, and photographers. Many of you that know my family know that my great grandmother was a nationally recognized artist who helped others deal with their depression through art. Her work is still around and can be seen in many places.

A couple of summers ago, I went to my Grandma's house and was helping her go through some old pictures. We came across a set that was done by my Great-Great-Great Aunt. Some of them included pictures of my Great Grandmother when she was young. I was fortunate enough to be given digital scans. I thought I would share them with you. In my opinion, she was a progressive artist. Her work is indicative of some of the styles prevalent today. From other pictures I have seen of that time period, hers was more fantasy based. She was an Artist first, and a photographer second. Anyway, I hope you like them.

Happy Memorial Day!

I would like to start this post by saying thank you to all the people who have ever served and the families of those that have served. This nation would not be free without your great sacrifice. In my family, I have a brother, some cousins, a grandfather, and a great-great uncle. They have my appreciation and respect. I have heard a soldier described as one who writes a check to the nation at a price up to and including their life. I don't know who originally said it, but it gives me chills to think about what that really means. Let me encourage all my readers to take the time to personally thank those who have served.  I went out and took some pictures this morning. I hope to get them posted in the next couple of days.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to go on "Nurse Jewitt's Nature Walk". I had a really good time. We went up Gee Creek and saw the water fall. It was a very relaxing time. It felt so peaceful. Much thanks to Carri and Andy for letting me tag along. Here are a few of the pictures that I took.

In my last post, I mentioned that I was moving. Just a quick update on that. I am moved, but not unpacked. There is not internet access at this point, so I will be posting from WiFi hotspots intermittently. Here is what the house looks like for those who are interested.

Organization day

So this morning I was going through some files that I was going to move into back up storage. I came across this picture and realized that I had not shared it with you guys. It was a totally unplanned picture. But it ended up being the only productive thing that came out of that day. Hope you guys enjoy it. Also keep in mind that today is that last day to enter the May GiveAway. Check it out here if you have not already done so. I hope you are having a great weekend. Talk to you later.

May GiveAway!!!

Ok guys, this month I am going to be giving away a 8 by 10 standout of any one of my images. This is a 3/4 inch standout that is ready to hang without framing or matting. Rules are simple. Same rules as the last couple of times, in fact. You can become a follower to this blog. Another option is that you can "burn" a subscription via Feedburner. The final option is sharing this to your Facebook page.

Here are some of my favorites. You don't necessarily have to choose one of these, but thought I would share to give you some inspiration. Looking forward to seeing who wins and which one they choose.

May Download

Hey guys, Here is the free download for this month. What do you think? Just like the last ones, simply right click on the image and select "save as" to do whatever you want with it.

It will be time for the May Giveaway soon. Any special requests that you would like to see? The last two winners have been from Pennsylvania, so hopefully this month the luck will move outside that state. I will be in touch soon. Drop me a line or let me know if you have something that interests you.

Burning Skies

Many of you know that I really enjoy the colors in sunsets. One of the things that I have come to learn about them is how different atmospheric conditions affect the appearance and saturation levels of colors. No, this isn't scientific. It is just a guy standing out staring at lots of sunsets. Tonight, we had a deep haze with a slight cloud cover just off of the horizon. Basically, the haze acts as a magnification filter for the color and the clouds act as reflectors. Here is the effect...

April Photo Give-away!

Alright people! It is that time again. Last month was a huge success, so I am hoping for a repeat this month. Go ahead and limber  up your fingers and get ready to do some typing! :-)

This month, you can choose any size up to an 8 by 12 of one of the following:

Downtown Chattanooga
Hunter Art Museum and Walnut Street Bridge
Spring Redbud Tree

It will be same rules as the last one. You can enter by sharing this link on Facebook, by becoming a follower, or by subscribing via Feedburner. Just like last time, when you do any of the above, email me (damoncorwine@gmail.com) or comment on this post so I can get your name in the drawing. This will run through April 23rd, so there is lots of time to get in on this. On the 24th, I will have my kids pick a random number and that person will be the winner.

I am pretty excited about these! Can't wait to see how it goes. So without further ado... Contest officially started!

Pictures for picture's sake...

So, I realize these are not the most compelling subjects, but I kind of like how they turned out. I needed to take some new pictures today. While I have been "keying" on landscapes (sorry, couldn't resist), You can only take the same picture with the same lighting so many times...

Here are a couple more of some things that people don't normally pay attention to... Thanks for looking. Let me know what you think...

Which do you like better? A or B?

A

B

Same picture, treated two different ways. Which one do you like better?

Don't forget the free download here. I have received good feedback so far about it, so I am thinking this will become a more regular occurrence. I have seen it down like I did it this last time. Another guy does it with a monthly Calendar in the corner. Not so attached to either, just kind of wondering if there are any preferences out there. Let me know.

Free Download!!!

Hey guys! This is another one of the images from last night. I wanted to put it out there as a FREE DOWNLOAD! That's right. Just right click on the file above for a free full resolution copy of the picture. Just my way of saying thanks for sticking around. Copy it, print it, share it. It is yours to do with as you will. Just let me ask you this... Who loves ya, baby?!?!?

Just a quick note on the technical. This is a standard 4 by 6 format, so it will print in a 4x6 or 8x12 without any cutting or cropping. If you want a 5 by 7 or 8 by 10, you will lose some of the edges. Should be ready to roll for a desktop background though... If you choose to get it printed, I recommend using a reputable printer. Most Walmart or Walgreen's do a fine job for snapshots, but colors get a little wonky on jobs like this...

Spending time downtown

Hey guys! Spent some time downtown tonight. This one is the first of several that I will be posting, but it is late and I have to be up early... so this will need to be enough for now. Hope you like. Let me know what  you think. I tried a new process on this one, so see if you can guess what it is. This one might make it on the short list for the give away this month. :-)

Couple more of the Dome

Just a couple more from yesterday. These are more in line with what I was trying to do with the first image. Not sure which of the series I like better. There is just something about how the first picture is off kilter that keeps me coming back to it. How about you guys?

Dome Building

Just a different look at a familiar site downtown. Didn't quite turn out the way I had it figured, but I kind of like it anyway. What do you think?

Seeing the whole picture...

I normally look at the color in pictures. I like the bright, flashy lights, or the deep, rich hues. But if that was all that it took to make a cool picture, I would be content with color panels hanging all over my walls. So not the case...
In this picture, you see Pensacola Lighthouse silhouetted by the fading sunset. Light streams through the clouds, reaching back like fingers to desperately clasp the last moments of the fading day. The details make a difference...

Photo Give-Away!

Hey guys, I have seen this tried on other blogs, so I wanted to give it a try here. I am hoping that it will be a good way to interact with some of the people that have followed me from the beginning and maybe some new ones as well.

This will be a drawing. At the end of this week, I will have one of my kids pick a random number and that person will be the one who gets the picture. They will be able to choose from one of the following:

Downtown Chattanooga, 6" tall

Hunter Art Museum, 6" tall

Walnut Street Bridge, 6" tall

There will be three ways to enter the contest. One way will be to share this post to your Facebook or Twitter account. I have the option at the top right side of this post to share it using those buttons. Another way to enter will be to subscribe via the Feedburner link just below the FB and Twitter links. Feedburner is a service that will automatically send updates to your email account without spam or having to manually check for updates. The final way to enter will be to just become a "follower". That is toward the bottom right corner of the page. Just sign in using a google account and it will let you add this blog to any others you currently follow.

Of course, after you have done one of the above (or all three!) comment here, or shoot me an email (damoncorwine@gmail.com) so I know to put your name on the list. I am excited to see what comes of this. Looking forward to seeing what some of you guys have to say!

Revisiting some older shots...

Hey guys, just wanted to check in. I am preparing to  move this weekend so this will more than likely be my last post until sometime next week. No, I am not dropping off the radar... Just a few days to get stuff in boxes to another location and back out of boxes.

Anyway, with that being said, I wanted to visit a few of my other photos that I had taken and may not have shared (and definitely have not shared here).

This one was taken at sunset on the levy that runs through Chattanooga. I had been out walking for about 2 hours trying to get some bird pictures. At this point in the evening, my feet hurt and I just wanted to get back to my car. As I was walking along, I look over and see the sun filtered behind the trees and, being that my temperament is bent toward curiosity, I wonder how the camera would react to a full frontal sun shot in those conditions. Obviously, the camera performed superbly. I think the part that I like the most is that bird in the tree. I didn't know it was there at the time, but I think it adds quite a bit to the shot.

This is one of my first attempts at a panoramic image. It was stitched together from three different shots. This was also during the same time frame that I learned the Orton effect and also basic layering principles. Some of you may recognize the scenery. The bridge in front is the Walnut Street bridge. I have been told that it is the longest walking bridge in America. Please feel free to let me know if this is not the case.

This last shot is one of my later panoramic images. It was shot in the wee hours of the morning in downtown Chattanooga. This was a 30 second timed exposure with a narrow aperture. Three different takes were put together to form this one. One of the things that I like about this one is that you can still see all the colored lights reflected in the water. This was taken right after Christmas, so the city had not yet removed it's decorations from the landing in front of the aquarium. The bridge on the left is Market Street. The bridge on the right is Hwy 27. The angled roof directly in the center is the Chattanooga aquarium.

Hope you like these. I promise to check in soon after I get settled into my new place. But until then, Au revoir, Mon Ami!
